Helping your budget with the right rewards program

Tuesday May 27, 2008

Rewards program benefits vary from institution to institution, but they usually follow a common thread. Occasionally, a credit card rewards program can offer not only products and services; it can also offer money back on your purchases.

A rewards program credit card will usually offer a few benefits that are not available on other rewards program credit cards, but most of the ones specialising in cash backs focus strongly on this aspect with very few of products and services generally found in a rewards program. The value that one can claim in cash backs compared to points redeemed is also normally much lower than the value of product rewards. This is largely due to the fact that the credit card issuer will buy products en masse making them individually cheaper, while giving cash back is a direct cost. A rewards program will usually be beneficial to both the user and provider thanks to perceived value, but a cash back credit card means the provider must make offers based on actual value.
